Barts Health are the first NHS trust to achieve a new waste management standard

Barts Health NHS trust have become the 1st NHS trust in England to achieve the Carbon Trust Waste Standard. The standard, launched last year, aims to focus organisations to examine their resource use and environment impact, evaluating and measuring their use of the waste hierarchy. The trust, who disposes of 6,000 tonnes of waste a year has eliminated all of its waste from landfill since October 2013, have ambitious targets to reduce their impact by 15% per patient by 2020.

The trust’s Sustainability Lead, Fiona Daly, said “we are striving to improve our compliance, reduce risk, reduce waste arising’s, develop innovative solutions for processing, embed behavioural change and drive commoditisation. Our partnership with Skanska have helped us to deliver outstanding results in all these areas and allowed us to continue to drive innovation”
