As NHS Sustainability Day is fast approaching, there are events and projects going on all over the country. Here’s a lovely round up of what people are up to.
Isle of Wight NHS Trust
On 26th March for NHS Sustainability Day we will unveil the winners of our Switch It Off competition. Switch It Off is a campaign taking place at the Isle of Wight NHS Trust to encourage our staff to adopt energy efficient behaviours be it in office or clinical areas.
Taunton & Somerset NHS Trust
Are supporting Sustainability Day in two ways:
We are engaging with our colleagues to show case the new Inventory Management System which is being rolled out this year, starting with theatres. This will enable just in time ordering to help prevent items going out of date, free up time in stock taking thus allowing clinical staff time to put the patients first.
In addition following on from the success of Climate Change week we are having a meat free alternative day in our restaurant
Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Sustainable food on the menu
Delicious, local, seasonal, sustainable food will be the order of the day at the Trust. Visit Shepherd Hall to learn about our suppliers’ values, how the Trust addresses waste sustainably, and access lots of resources on being healthy and well at work.
Staff sustainability showcase
Staff throughout the Trust are integral to driving sustainability and efficiency improvements into their departments. Join us in St Thomas’ where we’ll showcase the great ideas and successes staff have had.
Abandoned bikes clog up space in our secure parking areas and are costly to the Trust. The times they are a-changin an we’re now putting this waste to good use.
Film screening: Best Before
Determined to make sure healthy food is accessible to everyone, Londoners are taking matters into their own hands. Best Before is the story of how it’s happening.
All events are open to the public; the film-screening attendees will have to subscribe via eventbrite.
The Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
In support of NHS Sustainability Day, The Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will be holding an event between 12:00 and 14:00.
The Trust will have a number of different stall on site, that can provide staff, patients and the general public with information and ideas on how they can reduce their own and the trusts carbon footprint
The following organisations will be at Royal Bournemouth Hospital:

o Bournemouth Borough Council will also be in the main atrium providing staff & the general public with information about reducing their waste and increasing recycling at home.
o Veolia will have a stand providing advice to staff regarding increasing recycling and info on what happens to the waste once it has left the hospital site and where it will likely end up.
o Trust Sustainability Manager will also have a stall. There will be a chance for staff to sign up for a recycling bin within their office/ department/ ward/ area
East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust
Got ideas on how to help us reduce our CO2 emissions even further? The why not join us at our stand in the Lister’s main corridor this Thursday 26th March between 10am and 1pm. There you will find our sustainability leads from the Trust for Estates, Energy and Water, and from Travel and Transport.
The plan is to use the time to get feedback from both staff and public on what they think we should be prioritising over the next few years. We’ll have the three goals set by the Sustainable Development Unit, but it’s about getting ideas such as becoming more involved with other agencies and health related services, and linking/signposting to services such as Help the Aged, British Heart Foundation etc.
The Travel and Transport Representatives will be on a separate area of the stand to look at transport to the site – this will mainly be for staff but there will be information on cycle routes, and representatives from the local bus companies will be there to discuss transport routes for both staff and visitors.
We’ll be announcing the winners of the staff survey around Sustainability, and have the winning submissions up, and also there’ll be tree planting at 10am and 2pm as we were kindly donated 18 trees by NHS Forest.

United Lincolnshire Hospitals
are supporting the NHS Sustainability Day by announcing in our Trust and in the local media our 90k in 90 Days Challenge for all departments and staff which will begin next month.
It will be a fun programme in which we will be asking everyone to focus on small things we can all do to help reduce our carbon footprint over the next three months.
If all 7,500 members of staff just do one thing per week for the next 12 weeks then we will have taken 90,000 actions to help improve our environment.
Together with our 90k in 90Days Challenge ULH pledge during the summer of 2015 to present their Sustainable Development Management Plan to the Trust Board for endorsement and approval.
Let us know what brilliant things you’re doing for Sustainability Day and we’ll share it with the world!
