Sustainability shines at national awards ceremony

NHS honoured at Sustainability Award

NHS awards 01

Trusts were out in force last Thursday to celebrate the environmental impact on health. The second annual NHS Sustainability Awards, held in London, showcased Trusts and Ambulance Services from across England who were on hand to be honoured for their efforts to improve environmental performance and health.

Guest host for the evening and renowned horticulturist, Monty Don, was on hand to congratulate award winners and highly commended. One of the big winners of the evening was the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, who won the overall award for the evening. The Trust’s chief executive, Nick Carver, said: “Sustainability is a very big focus for the Trust, so to win the overall award on the night, along with the community and public health awards, was a great achievement. I know that this will give our teams the impetus to build on this success as we continue to move the sustainability agenda forward across the Trust’s hospitals.”

Alongside the youngsters of East and North Hertfordshire other winners included Guys and St Thomas NHS Trust who picked up honours for their work on Water and Energy, Manchester Central NHS Foundation Trust for their efforts on waste reduction, North Bristol NHS Trust who were honoured for their utilisation of local food produce and Derby Hospitals who Resisted calls for a multi-storey carpark and instead worked with Derby City Council and others to create a sustainable solution.

The awards form part of the NHS Sustainability Day Campaign, founded by Barts Health NHS Trust which runs annually across England. This year the campaign saw over 160 NHS Trusts take action to increase awareness of sustainability and the environment through a range of activities. Alongside these Trusts a further 200 organisations were involved to make the 2015 NHS Sustainability Day the most participated to date.

All submissions for the 2015 awards will now be compiled into a report highlighting the impact sustainability is having on finances and environmental performance within the NHS. The report will be submitted to the Department of Health this summer.
